Seminar on cancer biology was organized by Dolphin (PG) Institute of Biomedical & Natural Sciences, Dehradun, on 8th April, 2017, in which various eminent speakers shared their views.
Seminar was inaugurated by Mr. Arvind Gupta, Chairman, DIBNS, D.Dun, in his inaugural address he said that cancer is deadly disease which can be conquered by healthy and active life style.
On this occasion Dr. Gyanendra Awasthi, Head, Department of Biochemistry said that currently 200 different types of cancer are prevalent in which lung cancer is the most prominent one and approximately 1.4 million people in the world die of lung cancer in a year. Next common cause of death due to cancer in males is the cancer of prostate and more than 74,000 thousand people are dying because of cancer of gastrointestinal tract. Developed countries like North America and Western Europe was most affected in India cancer has become giant killer.
Key note speaker of the seminar Dr. Manisha Naithani, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, AIIMS, Rishikesh explained about grading of tumors and modern techniques for diagnosis of cancer.
Second speaker Dr. Narotam Sharma, In-charge Central Molecular Laboratory, SGRR Medical College, Dehradun spoke on Cervical Cancer. He said that it is major cause of death in females after breast cancer. It is caused by HPV virus and can be treated if diagnosis early. Last lecture was delivered by Dr. Premraj of Quigen Laboratory, Delhi, he explained about causes, diagnosis and treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. He said that stem cell therapy is the new technique for treatment of CML.
In the valedictory function Dr. Shailja Pant, Principal said that individual and community efforts can be helpful in fighting with the cancer. On this occasion Dr. Shruti Sharma, Mrs. Malti Sawhney, Dr. Ashwani Sanghi, Dr. Karishma Joshi and students were present in this seminar.
