Guest Lecture on “Genetic Engineering: A Tool to Change the World”
Department of Biotechnology organized a guest lecture by Dr. Arun Bhatt, Associate Professor Department of Biotechnology, GBPIET, Ghurdauri on “Genetic Engineering: A Tool to Change the World” on 14th of October 2024 . Dr. Bhatt started the talk with the genetic engineering history, following its development from the earliest experiments to the most recent developments. He stressed the diverse applications of genetic engineering, especially when it comes to healthcare and agriculture.
The lecture covered a wide range of genetic engineering applications. Dr. Bhatt spoke about the creation of genetically modified crops in agriculture that have higher yields, better nutritional value, and resistance to pests and illnesses. He also emphasized how genetic engineering might be used to solve issues with global food security and nutrition.
Dr. Bhatt discussed the therapeutic uses of genetic alteration in the medical field. He talked about gene therapy methods used to cure genetic illnesses. He also discussed how genetic engineering might be used to create customized medicine based on each patient’s unique genetic makeup.
In his final remarks, Dr. Bhatt discussed the moral dilemmas raised by genetic engineering. In order to maximize the advantages of genetic alteration while lowering any possible risks, he underlined the significance of ethical research procedures, public involvement, and international cooperation.
The lecture was attended by the UG and PG students of various departments including Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Zoology and Microbiology. Dr. Shalini Singh, Ms. Deepti Gulati, Dr. Deepali Rana, Dr. Sachin Singh and Ms. Tripti Garg also attended the lecture.
