First aid & Basic Life Support
Basic Life Support, or BLS, generally refers to the type of care that first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway. It requires knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway obstructions in patients of every age.
The course was divided into theory and practical sessions. 50 students attended the course. Theory included the introduction of First aid and BLS, Anatomy of Cardiopulmonary system, Handling and transporting the patient from the site of accident to hospital, components of First aid kit, Emergency numbers and coding, CPR, use of AED or Manual Defibrillator, Fist Aid for different emergency conditions.
The speakers of the course were Dr. Dharam P. Pandey, Director and HOD Manipal Hospital, New Delhi, certified BLS instructor, Dr. Satish Kumar, Chief Physiotherapist, MSS Hospital New Delhi, Dr. Deptee Warikoo, HOD, DIBNS, Dr. Prosenjit Patra, Senior Physiotherapist, ESIC Hospital, Dr. Keerty Mathur, Assistant Professor, DIBNS, Dr. Ashish Negi, Assistant Professor, SRHU, Jollygrant, Dehradun, Dr. Diksha Bhatt, Assistant Professor, DIBNS, Dr. Nidhi Rawat, Assistant Professor, DIBNS and Dr. Chaitanya Tamang, Assistant Professor, DIBNS.
All the speakers focussed mainly on implementation and application of First aid and BLS used in emergency conditions. The hands- on was taken on the last 2 days at Old Auditorium, DIBNS, by Dr. Pandey and Dr. Satish where the main focus was on the first aid tool for the prevention of injury and for transportation of injured from the site to the hospital, CPR and bandaging of the injured. The delegates practiced well with full motivation throughout the sessions. A theoretical and practical exam was conducted for the students, to test the knowledge gained. The certificates were then distributed to the students who successfully cleared the exam. With the BLS training that has been imparted to the students; they have learnt the technique to save lives.
