World Wetlands Day 2022
Commemorating World Wetlands Day-2022 at Dolphin (PG) Institute of Biomedical and Natural Sciences, Dehra Dun
World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on 2 February, aims to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
A call to take action for wetlands is the focus of this years’ campaign. It’s an appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded. 2 February 2022 is the first year that World Wetlands Day was observed as a United Nations international day, following its adoption by the General Assembly on 30 August 2021.
In the fitness of the things, Dolphin Institute Organised two webinars to commemorate the day, and to spread awareness on the various aspects of the conservation of Wetlands.
1. The department of Forestry Invited eminent conservationists as lead speakers, namely, Shri Sivakumar, IFS, Director-cum-CCF, Kaziranga National Park, Assam, Dr. G.V. Gopi, Scientist E & HoD Endangered Species Management, Wildlife Institute of India, and Dr Sheriza, Research Officer, International Tropical Forestry Institute, University Putra, Malaysia.
Further to develop skills in academic leadership six students with Forestry & allied subjects belonging to Uttarakhand, J&K, Karnataka and Kerala were invited to present and lead the strategic views on the status and specific features of the wetland of importance for an interdependent community for livelihood.
2. Concurrently department of Zoology organised a National webinar on “Environmental Laws for the Protection of Wetland and IPR Issues”. The lead speakers, Dr. M. Muruganandam, Principal Scientist ICAR-IISWC emphasized on conservation of fish resources in wetlands; Dr. Sharda Kosankar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur spoke about the effectiveness of Environmental Protection Laws in the conservation of wetlands, while Ms. Pallavi Kadam, Founder, IP Adventure LLP highlighted the applicability of IPR and the Climate Change.
It is proposed to undertake a field trip of the College students to the 1st International Ramsar Site Wetland of Uttarakhand, i.e. Asan Wetland CR on 7th February 2022.
